This is the second time this year that South Korean chaebol Samsung has disclosed a cybersecurity incident that led to the unlawful access of certain customer information.
Samsung stated in a notice that “in late July 2022, an unauthorized third-party obtained information from several of Samsung’s U.S. networks.” We discovered through our continuing investigation that certain customers’ personal information was compromised on or about August 4, 2022.
According to Samsung, the intrusion allowed hackers to access details about product registrations, names, contact and demographic information, and dates of birth.
Although it emphasized that the incident did not affect users’ Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or debit card numbers, it was stated that the information that was compromised for each pertinent consumer may differ.
Along with informing consumers of the security incident, Samsung said it has secured the affected systems and hired a cybersecurity company from outside to oversee the response.
Additionally, it advises users to keep an eye out for possible social engineering tactics, refrain from clicking on links or opening attachments from e-mails from people they don’t know, and check their accounts for any potentially unusual activity.
Less than six months after Samsung confirmed a related incident, the announcement was made. In March 2022, it disclosed that internal information, like as the source code for its Galaxy devices, had been exposed following a sting operation by the LAPSUS$ extortion group.
